Remember how you felt when you read Fifty Shades of Grey for the first time? What if we told you we’ve created a way to write your own Fifty Shads of Grey?
Fifty Shades of Grey unlocked some of your hidden desires. It also unlocked – whether you know it yet or not – your creativity. Find out how a little creative writing of your own can give you that reading-it-for-the-first-time feeling every day.
“I Wrote It For Myself.”
As the story goes, Fifty Shades of Grey started out as Twilight fan fiction. When E.L. James started writing, there’s no way she could have known that it would become what it is today. It wasn’t her grand plan to sit down and write a trilogy of novels that would become a cultural sensation. Nope.
She started just like any of us – a woman with a secret fantasy about two characters that captured her imagination. James actually said it herself in an interview with TIME.
“I wrote the books for myself. It’s my fantasy writ large.”
It’s the true wonder of our time. We now have a public place where we can share what we think are our most niche of interests, and find other people – lots of other people – who feel and think exactly the same way. Our pleasure is, most likely, someone else’s.
Sharing Our Secrets
If a fantasy sticks with you long enough, it becomes something more – a desire (and sometimes a need). There are many ways to live our fantasies, however, other than physically engaging in them.
Sometimes it’s fulfilling just to have other people bear witness to our innermost thoughts. To do like James did, and take satisfaction in leaving personal revelations in little discoverable places for others – perhaps even strangers – to find on their own.
It’s why we love to share and tell personal secrets. It’s thrilling to think that we’re giving away a little piece of ourselves to another human being – a special piece that says something about our core as a person.
Turning Secrets Into Stories
Fifty Shades of Grey did favors for a lot of people. It erased some of the stigma around reading sexy novels, it rekindled the sex lives of more than a few couples, and the story of its creation inspired a lot of creativity.
That last point is perhaps more significant than you think. It’s amazing that E.L. James went from being a fan to becoming the star all because she put down her fantasies onto the page. For those of us who have been reading romance for years, it certainly begs a lot of “what ifs.”
We now have a lot of places to catalogue our secrets, and benefit from the thrill of knowing they’re getting some exposure. There are blogs, social media accounts, and even the barriers to publishing books are being torn down thanks to sites like Amazon and Wattpad.
Rolemancing Your Own Fifty Shades of Grey
At Rolemance we’re fascinated by roleplay and story. We’ve figured out how normal people – who have incredible fantasies living inside them – can have a little piece of the same experience that E.L. James did each and every day. We’ve built a place where people can go to find a perfect partner to share in a fantasy and bear witness to each other’s secrets.
One of the ways we do that is by putting emphasis on story inside of the app. Writing as a story allows for sharing with others. It gives something concrete for another person to hook into – a narrative. When you build a world, a relationship, and characters with another person, you’re not only celebrating their imagination, you’re also creating a shared experience. You’re creating your own shared secret together.
The other way we try to help this process along is by helping you find a match. Not every Rolemancer is going to be a perfect secret-sharer for another Rolemancer. In the app, you’ll see that each writer scores a compatibility percentage based on how well your writing fits together. It’s easier to figure out who’s going to be that special someone that knows – and adds to – your private fantasies.
Haven’t tried Rolemance? You could be sharing secret stories with your own perfect partner right now. Try the app – available now for iOS. Happy Rolemancing, everyone. 💋
