It seems young romance always begins the same. Two young people meet and a spark draws them to spend time together until they’re inseparable. But it’s the lives of these people that usually creates trouble in paradise.
Tyler Frye was a interesting case when it came to ‘normal’. He never really went to school, his adopted mother homeschooled him. He never really had friends, he mostly went out with his adopted father to work. No one really knew who he was. They just knew he was the handsome kid in the nice house at the end of the block. This sort of recluse behavior very quickly fell away though, after meeting (y/c) he begins to travel out more. Meeting people and starting to socialize. After months of seeing each other (y/c) begins to ask more about his origins, what he does for work with his father, and when can she meet them. Now he fights himself knowing he wasn’t supposed to become attached, how will he tell her that he works amongst his parents gang?
Victoria was at home on her phone. She was planning on hanging out with Tyler that day and looked at her brother making himself something to eat. He absolutely hated Tyler so she always just told him that she was going to hang out with friends. She got up and went over to the counter. “Hey, I’m going to go hang out with Chloe. Alright?” She said and waiting for him to give her a nod of approval, she grabbed her keys and left.
After checking his phone one last time Tyler pushed it into the outside pocket of his bag and stretched. The pop of his spine as he twisted was followed by a groan. He lifted his shirt in the wall of mirrors in his room and winced touching the bruises on his left side. He brought his shirt down and went to his closet crabbing a black hoodie he had bought when Victoria took him to one of her schools sporting events. He grabbed his keys and walked out the door locking it behind him. It wasn’t like his parents were ever home anyway.
Victoria walked down her side walk slowly, looking at her feet as she walked slowly and steadily. She took out her phone and texted Tyler. “Where are we meeting again?” She asked in the text. She then put her phone in her back pocket and continued to walk slowly, and steadily, messing around and putting one foot in front of the other. She took a strand of long wavy brown hair and tucked it behind her ear slightly as she walked.
His response time was quick as he was in the Lebanon when he received her text. “ I was thinking I’ll pick you up on your way and we’ll go to downtown London. You said you wanted to shop.” He pushed the phone back into his pocket and reached in his bag pulling out his baseball cap as a tool cover his messy hair. As he walked out of the Levantine into the parking garage he didn’t notice his silver bandana hanging from his book bag. He walked over finding his sleek black Lexus and climbing in pulling out othe parking garage.
“Alright.” She texted back and sighed looking up at the sky, admiring the clouds for a couple minutes. She then sat down on the curb of the side walk and began playing games on her phone. She looked around for your car every now and then and then went back to playing her games.
As he drove he swooned back and fourth to the r&b playing low in the car. As he turned onto a side street he could see a familiar girl sitting on the side walk. As he pulled the sleek car up he honked on the horn lowering the window. “Aye shorty you need a ride somewhere?” He joked unlocking the door and pushing his bag onto the floor.
She rolled her eyes and stood up smiling when she saw his face and opened the door to the passengers seat. She got into the car and closed the door behind her. She kissed him lightly on the lips and buckled up. “Hey.” She finally said after she was settled in.
“Wow didn’t think girls just got into strangers cars.” He commented stupidly before she kissed him. He changed the car into drive again and rolled off turning back onto a main street heading towards the downtown area. It was usually where tourists or wealthy kids shopped to impress their peers. He was never one to dress to impress but he did really like clothes so he didn’t mind the whole shopping thing. “How’s your brother?” He questioned attempting to make conversation.
She rolled her eyes again at the thought of him. “God, annoying. I’m so sick of picking up his fucking beer bottles every night.” She said angrily before taking a deep breathe. “We don’t have to go shopping today. I mean, maybe I could meet your parents.” She said keeping her voice steady and casual. “It’s a perfect day for that.” She says continuing from where she left off. She didn’t look at him while she spoke and was looking out of her window, with her hazel green eyes.
A heavy breath left his lungs as she asked. It wasn’t the first time, but he knew the longer he kept them from her the more she would become suspicious. “Babe I don’t know if meeting my parents is a good idea.” Usually he would shut the idea down with a lot more aggression but it felt like the more time he spent with this girl the more he could feel that tough witty ladies mans facade slip away.
She sighed and thought for a moment before responding. “Why not?” She asked turning her head to look at him this time. “What’s so bad about them? I mean everybody’s parents are a little weird or have something wrong with them. So why are yours so different?
“My parents are..” he paused. “Weird wouldn’t describe them. They’re risky.” He knew he sounded cryptic and crazy. “Besides I cant let them scare you away I’m having too much fun.” He changed the tone quickly grabbing her hand holding it as he continued to drive, planting a kiss on the back of her hand.
She smiled at him and bit her lip. “Nothing can scare me away from you, Tyler.” She said softly, watching him concentrate. She moved her hand up his arm as she watched him.
A few minutes had passed and the two found themselves inside of another parking garage except this one was in the shopping plaza. As Tyler stepped out of the car he stretched his back wincing once again but remembering she was there. “Can you pass me my wallet and phone, it’s in the front pocket.” He pointed at his backpack before closing the door and walking around toward the other side of the car.
She opened the front pocket of the backpack and dig through it looking for his wallet and phone. She finally found them and opened her door, handing the items to him, getting out of the car.
As she handed them to him he shoved the two into his pocket. As she turned he looked at her with a grin, “damn like I forgot how pretty you are sometimes” he spoke smoothly aware of his charming personality.
She smiled wrapping her arms around his neck and kissing him softly. “One day I’m going to meet these mystery parents.” She said giggling, looking up at him, her arms still around his neck as she slightly played with his hair.
“And you’ll be severely dissapointed” he joked “they won’t live up to the hype.” He downplayed them to her and kissed her once more. Turning away from her he started to walk knowing she’d catch up beside him.
She pouted and caught up to him, walking beside him at the same pace. “Hm, Whatever.” She said crossing her arms and looking away from him. She looked at her phone reading a text from her brother and ignored it, putting her phone back away.
The two made it out of the parking garage into the massive plaza lined with stores. Each side held stores of all kids from restaurants to Rolex outlets. As they walked Tyler kind of window shopped each store as they walk. “Anywhere you wanna stop?”
She shrugged. “I don’t know I’m fine with anywhere.” She said slowly. She looked around at all the stores uninterested.
After all the time they spent together Tyler didn’t have a problem reading her emotions. As she looked around he elbowed her softly, “you don’t wanna be here do you?”
She turned her head to him and looked at him for a moment before smiling and shaking her head. “No, not really.” She says softly before she stopped walking.
He turned to her as she stopped raising an eyebrow. “Where do you want to be then?” He questioned her. If there was somewhere else she wanted to go he didn’t mind he was always pretty open to her making their plans.
She shrugged slightly. “I don’t know.” She said looking at the time on her phone. “Do you just want to go to my place? My brother should be at work by now.” She says putting her phone away and looking back at him.
“Fuck it why not” he shrugged turning all the way around with her making their way back to the car. The walk felt longer going up hill towards the parking garage. As they entered they walked taking their time to get to the Lexus. But as they approached the car Tyler felt strange, he looked around and could see someone walking the opposite direction. “Hey!” He yelled in a few more aggressive tone as he seemed very untrusting. As he spoke almost on cue the man bolted off, but as Tyler went to run after him the Lexus blew up inside the garage.
Victoria was confused when she saw the man and Tyler run after him, and when she saw the Lexus blow up it was like something was triggered inside of her. Like a bad memory. She began to freeze up, not even looking when Tyler ran after the strange figure. She stared straight ahead, frozen in place. Her breathing got heavier as she stood there frozen staring at the wrecked up, burning car.
The start the man had alongside the shock of the blast kept Tyler from catching him. He quickly gave up running back to Victoria. “V.” He shook her “V. Victoria look at me we have to go.” Tyler’s head whipped around constantly he could tell someone else was in here with them. He shook her back to reality pulling her as he began running towards the exit again.
She followed him being a bit slow, taking in everything that had happened so far. “Where are we going?” She finally asked. Her voice shaky and unsteady.
They continued to run before suddenly stopping Tyler pulled her into a side alley looking out behind them. He scrambled for his pockets not answering her question he dialed a number. “H hello. Yeah it’s me. They attacked me. Hit my car. No I’m on 6th and Polaris. Okay I’ll be there soon.” He shook his head wiping sweat from his face and grabbing her shoulders. “I’m sorry. You weren’t supposed to see anything like that. At least now you get to meet my parents.”
It looked like she didn’t seem to care. She was lost in thought. There was a terrible image in her head as she kept thinking about the car exploding. “I-I want to go home.” She said slowly
“You can’t. I’m not leaving you alone right now.” He continued looking around he could see a car parked at the opposite end. “Come on we have to go.”
She slowly followed him to the car, keeping her head down. Her heart never stopped racing.
As they approached the car he stopped at the back window and pulled at the door but it was locked. He grunted in frustration and pulled off his hoodie and wrapped it around his hand before punching the window a few times. He finally smashed it and reached around to unlock the passenger door to get her into the car.
Once she was in the car she gulped hard and looked down. She held her hands up to her face and then put them down by her sides. She watched as Tyler got into the other side of the car and looked into her broken window.
He began pulling apart the plastic underneath the steering wheel and yanking out wires. After a few moments he connected some and turned the key and the car sprung to life. As he pulled off he was quick in his pace. “Are you okay?
She didn’t answer him after a few minutes of still looking out the window before nodding, in complete silence. She took a deep breathe before looking at him.
He looked at her a sense of panic anger and frustration all at the same time. Yet as she made eye contact with him it changed to a face of empathy. “I’m sorry.” Were all that left his lips as the two drove in the stolen car.
She managed to push away the terrible thoughts she was thinking throughout the car ride and pull herself back to therapy. She was looking over a text message from her brother that said he was going to be home late. She sighed and texted him a simple okay and put her phone back away.
As the two drove in silence he sighed knowing he couldn’t hide anymore. “I’m dangerous. If you want to leave I get it. You weren’t supposed to be in danger. I live a dangerous life, and I’m scared I’ll pull you into it.
She smiled a little before looking at him. “Tyler... I don’t want to leave you. Ever.” She says taking his hand in hers
“I guess I have to be honest with you now.” His relief was evident as she grabbed his hand. “V, since I was a kid I was always fighting and running. I was in foster care in the US and ran constantly. So when I was shipped here I tried the same thing. That’s when my dad picked me up off the street. Look point is my parents are dangerous people and by proxy I became that same thing.”
She smiled a little more. “I still care about you. I think I kind of knew a little bit. You’re not the best liar.” She says laughing the tiniest bit.
He sighed shaking his head, “okay that makes this easy then. Have you ever heard of the London Rooks?” He questioned knowing most people had.
She slowly nodded after thinking for a moment. “Yeah.”
“Ok great then I’ll keep it simple. I’m in the Rooks my parents are the gang leaders. I’ve been doing it since I was a kid. There’s my big secret” he felt a weight almost literally lift off of him.
It was silent for a few minutes. “Really?” She asked after a bit.
He looked at her questioning if it was her to believe.“yes really. Does this help prove it?” He raised his shirt to show the bruising he had along his ribs. “Tough day at the office.”
She touched it softly looking at it with a worried expression on her face. “Sorry.” She said looking up at him.
“Why are you sorry?” He raised an eyebrow. “You didn’t give me bruises” he joked “you gave me the scratches on my back.” He winked comically trying to lighten the mood.
Her face got a little red as she smiled and bit her lip looking away from him
As they drove their trip seemed to come to a stop as they pulled into a train yard and parked about 60 feet before a broken bridge like structure. Tyler turned off the car and climbed out stretching his legs.
She got out of the car next, closing the door behind her and looking around.
He began walking toward the edge and looking around before checking his watch.
She followed behind him slowly. Still looking around.
He stopped as the slow rumble began getting louder. He grabbed her hand.
She stayed close to him. “What is that..?” She asked slowly
“Do you trust me?” He raised an eyebrow with an evil smirk.
She smiled and nodded. “Yeah, I do.”
“Good” suddenly the rumble became louder and he pulled her as he ran jumping off the bridge.
She held onto him tightly, her eyes squeezed tightly shut.
He yelled more enjoyment than fear before hitting something and bouncing.
She finally opened her eyes after a moment and looked around. Still holding on tight to him
He began laughing hysterically, “you should’ve seen your face” he patted the mattresses they landed on.
She frowned and punched him in his shoulder and crossing her arms.
He laughed at her frustration before his expression changed. Out from the train car came a woman dressed rather posh and she did not look happy. “Tyler what the fuck happened?”
Victoria immediately stopped laughing and stared at the women.
“M mom look they rigged the car I had no control of the situatio-” she cut him off. “Who is this?” Staring at her. “This is-” his mother was aggressive in tone, “I’m sure she can speak for herself.”
She stood up jumping off the mattress. “Her name is Victoria.” She says mocking her voice.
She raised an eyebrow at the girl and her tone. “Ok so she’s feisty. Why is she here?” She questioned as a dozen rooms stood by waiting for an answer. “Well uhh mom I’ll be look I meant to tel Lyly but you’ve been busy this is my uhm” as tough as he was he had crumbled into a simple embarrassed kid in front of the woman who he called mom.
“His girlfriend.” She finished his sentence her arms crossed staring at the women who bothered her in a way that made her feel annoyed.
He looked over at Victoria and was wide eyed with surprise. His mother looked around at the rooms before her aggressive appearance fell away. “So we keep secrets now Tyler? I raised you better. Sorry about him honey I’m Evie” she helped Victoria off the mattresses as the other rooks laughed.
“Nice to meet you.” She said stubbornly as she got off the mattress.
“You have to understand my son here is in a peculiar business with us and him bringing random people into our more secluded home is a bit high tension for us.” Tyler was truly shocked by the way his mother was so coy even though she had always wanted to keep him from becoming attached.
Victoria laughed coldly a little bit. “That’s nice. I didn’t ask. Maybe if you didn’t make him feel like he had to keep secrets he wouldn’t.” She said her voice harsh
Tyler spoke trying to defuse the situation, “Victoria you’ve gott-” he was cut off by his mother again. “Honey I want to like you but you need to understand. What my son does here you probably don’t understand. His whole life should be secret. Be glad I’m not throwing you to the wolves that are after you after seeing you with him. These are the reasons why he wasn’t supposed to have a girlfriend. But here ‘you’ are.”
She smiles for a moment being silent. She then looks her dead in the eye. “Alright ‘honey’” She says mocking her voice again putting emphasis on the word honey. “I can be with whoever the fuck I want. No old hag like you is going to tell me otherwise okay? And I don’t like you very much because so far you just seem like an old, annoying ass cold hearted bitch. Now if you would excuse me, dinners waiting for me at home.” She says turning away and walking off looking at a text on her phone and responding to it.
As Victoria began to walk away look at her phone Tyler grabbed her arm. Just in time as she almost fell off the platform. He pulled her back as they entered another tunnel. “You’re not exactly gonna go home from here.” He made it clear to her the fact that the train wouldn’t stop. He whispered to her as he had her away, “you wanted to meet her and IK be honest babe you’re being a real bitch right now” he wasn’t one to hold his words even with her.
She shoved him “I am?” She began to laugh. “That’s funny. Leave me alone.” She said leaning against the concrete of the tunnel waiting for the rest of the train to keep going.
“So we’re mad at me now?” He questioned with an attitude in his voice. “What the fuck did I do?” He questioned again lacking a f liter for his words.
“You and your mom are assholes I’m leaving as soon as this train stops and going home.” She says turning her head and crossing her arms.
“So you cursing my mom out when she said nothing that crazy makes her an asshole. Me saving your life makes me an asshole?” He shook his head grabbing her shoulders to make her face him. “You really don’t get it. I do illegal things. My parents didn’t want me to get attached to anyone for their safety. And now I brought you here because they know what you look like and you’re acting like I’ve done something wrong.” He ranted.
She laughs more. “Yes you both are assholes now shut up!” She yelled annoyed, facing away from him again, now frowning
“You are making zero fucking sense right now.” He walked off leaving her on the platform as the train continued to travel at high speeds through the city tunnels with no destination in sight.
She slid down to the floor and watched as the train went, hugging her knees and waiting patiently. She looked at her phone again at the text asking where she was and sighed
Tyler was now frustrated at her reaction. She had prayed and now that he had tried to protect her she acted like he was some sort of villain. He went to one of the cars that most of the men resided in and sat talking with some of his friends he grew up with. As time passed A man walked out onto the platform Victoria was on. He was wearing a long jacket with a pistol clearly visible underneath. “You put on quite a show. Evie is trying to act frustrated but I think she likes you.” He laughs as he leans up against the wall opposite to her.
“Mhm.” She said while she was on her phone, playing a game waiting for the train to pass already.
“You know he means well. How long he’s been keeping you in the dark on everything?” He asked pulling off his gloves and warming his hands as it was starting to get cold in the night London air.
“Few months.” She says still playing her games on her phone.
“Must really like you.” He laughed. “Victoria is it? I’m James you can call me Frye if you’d like.” He looked at the girl.
She looked up at him and nodded after a moment. “Wish I could say it was nice to meet you.” She says as the train finally passes and she stands up.
He watches her behavior and lets out a slight chuckle. “Where do you think you’re going? You know this train doesn’t stop right?” He questioned. “Probably another thing he didn’t tell you.
She rolls her eyes. “Okay is exit please?” She says sarcastically and now very annoyed and wanting to go home knowing her brother will keep her in the house for days if she isn’t home soon.
“Besides you may not like 2/3 of us Frye’s but we’re not gonna let you get grabbed by the Ravens. They know you’re face and they know you were with Tyler”
“I need to get home. So I don’t want to be the one to be a burden, really. But let me go or I call the cops.” She says plainly.
“No offense mrs Victoria but I don’t think you understand. No one is trying to hurt you’re really but if you leave the train you will most likely die to put it bluntly. And honestly what will you tell the police? My boyfriend who saved my life is keeping me from danger? They’ll think you’re mad.” He laughed, “look I know we may seem a bit mean or crazy but truly we have your safety in mind here. I wouldn’t be surprised if Tyler is out right now hunting down who saw you to make sure you’re not hurt.”
“He didn’t save my fucking life all he did was string me along while he ran from that-” she puts her hand on her head feeling dizzy. “That-” she continues, using all her strength to keep her eyes open, before fainting.
“Boy is this girl bloody mad” he speaks out of frustration as he catches her before she falls. “Rooks clear a bed in the infirmary!” He yelled to the nearby car.
She wakes up a few hours later rubbing her eyes. She groans in pain as her head hurts and looks around.
I’m the infirmary sat Tyler across from her. He was dozing off in the seat beside the bed shaking every so often with the movement of the train.
“Tyler?” She slowly said looking at him with innocent eyes.
At his name he snapped awake sitting forward and looking up. “Oh you’re up.
“I’m sorry.” She slowly said, rubbing her throbbing head.
“Sorry for what?” He asked wondering if she’d gotten amnesia with the way she changed tones from earlier.
“Being so rude to you before.” She said.
“Yeah you did do that didn’t you” he laughed. “You were mad I deserved it.” He smiled “left a good impression on my mom though, she said she liked how you didn’t take any shit” he laughed.
She smiled and got up, walking towards him and kissing him softly.
As she met his lips he could hear the door open. “You picked a right ornery one didn’t you son” his unmistakable heavy Irish accent was easy to recognize.
Victoria sat back down on the bed casually and looked at whoever was at the door.
“Uhm babe this is my dad James” he said awkwardly to her looking back and fourth at the both of them.
She waved silently at him, and then looking at her phone and scrolling through the many text messages on it.
He saw her scrolling and shook his head. “Your brother”
“What about him?” She said looking at him narrowing her eyes, defending the only family she had.
He raised an eye, “just asking if that’s him texting you.” He put his hands up as if he was being interrogated. James chimes in “wow feisty I finally found someone who can get you to pipe down” he laughed
She went back to texting him back on his phone. “Can you take me home?” She asked not looking up.
“I don’t want to leave you by yourself without protection. Not until we deal with the Raven attack.”
She glares at him. “No, you’re going to take me home.” She says sternly
“Fine then I guess me and you’re brother are gonna come face to face again.” He shrugged standing up opposing her stubbornness.
“Nope. You’re going to drop me off and leave.” She says getting up an beginning to walk.
He grabbed her arm, “Victoria what do you not understand about people trying to kill you? I don’t think I’m making it so hard to understand.”
“I don’t care.” She says getting out of his grip and continuing to walk.
“I’m not taking you somewhere for you to die because you have it engrained in your head that this is a goddamn game” he sits back down.
“Then I’m not talking to you at all until you get me home.” She says turning away from him and crossing her arms
“Look how about I take you to my place you tell your brother you’re staying at someone’s house and it’s solved.”
She rolled her eyes. “Fine whatever.” She says
He stood up again, walking to a door he slid it open and yelled to a conductor. “Slow is down a bit.” Before turning and walking past her out the other door.
She followed him, her arms still crossed and her head down.
The trained lowered its speed slightl enough to jump off. Tyler turned to her still frustrated and simply spoke, “roll” before he dove off rolling off the gravel to avoid hurting himself.
She copied what he did, and shorty after got up and dusted herself off.
He looked at her, “I know you’re like mad at me for some unrealistic reason but I want you to known that was really attractive.” He chuckled walking to a few shopping containers.
She blushed a little holding in her small laugh and continued to follow him.
He pulled open the container revealing a Ducati motorcycle and a few leather jackets and helmets lining the walls. Along side the helmets were some guns and other tools. “Grab a helmet, and maybe a jacket. It’s probably look good” he joked before turning away he put one of the jackets on before quickly grabbing a gun off the table and tucking it in his pants making his jacket cover it over his back.
She slowly put on a helmet and one of the jackets, and then getting on the motorcycle behind him.
He reached back pushing the pistol more secure in his pant hem. He then turned the key of the bike, it roaring alive.
She wrapped her arms around his mid stomach
He kicked the bike stand away and revved the bike taking off out of the container.
